Business Change

Improving how your organisation works, performs, and evolves

Business change is about helping organisations work better, not just differently. It focuses on how your business operates day-to-day: its processes, systems, governance, and ways of working.

At changemaker, we help organisations design and deliver structured business change that improves performance, reduces friction, and supports long-term sustainability. Whether the driver is regulatory, operational, or strategic, we bring the clarity, alignment, and delivery discipline to make it happen.

What we mean by Business Change

Business change sits between strategy and execution. It’s the bridge between ambition and the everyday realities of how work gets done.

Unlike digital transformation, it’s not led by technology. Unlike organisational change, it’s not focused on structure or roles. It’s about how your organisation operates, and how to make that more effective, efficient, and resilient.

Typical areas of business change include:

Our role is to help you make these shifts with purpose, precision, and people in mind, ensuring the change is understood, owned, and sustained.

How we help

Every piece of business change has three dimensions: design, delivery, and adoption.
We help clients manage all three through a structured, people-centred approach.

1.

Change Design

We work with leaders and teams to define the why, what, and how of change.

That means understanding drivers, designing new ways of working, mapping impacts, and aligning people, process, and performance around shared goals.

2.

Organisational Readiness

Our delivery experts translate design into action.

We establish clear governance, planning, and progress tracking, ensuring milestones are met, risks managed, and communication kept open and honest throughout.

3.

Human Change

Real business change sticks when people feel part of it.

We use proven behavioural and psychological methods to engage teams, develop capability, and support leaders to role-model the new ways of working.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some common questions about how we help organisations deliver change more effectively.

Business Change is the process of improving how an organisation works day to day.

It can include changes to processes, systems, governance, controls, reporting, capabilities and ways of working.

The aim is not simply to introduce something new. It is to help the organisation work more effectively, make better decisions and sustain improved performance.

Business Change focuses on how work gets done across the organisation.

This includes processes, workflows, governance, systems, performance measures and operational ways of working.

Organisational Change focuses more on the organisation itself, including structure, roles, reporting lines, decision rights, leadership alignment and culture.

The two often overlap. A restructure may require new processes and governance, while a process change may expose wider structural issues.

Digital Transformation is usually driven by technology, systems, data or digital services.

Business Change focuses on the operational changes needed around that technology.

This may include redesigning processes, clarifying ownership, changing controls, building capability and helping teams adopt new ways of working.

Technology may enable the change, but Business Change helps make it work in practice.

Business Change defines what needs to work differently.

Human Change helps people understand, adopt and sustain those new ways of working.

It considers how people experience the change, what support they need, how leaders should communicate and what may prevent adoption.

Business Change is unlikely to last if the people affected do not understand it, believe in it or feel capable of working differently.

Business Change support may be useful when:

  • Processes have become inconsistent, duplicated or unclear
  • Governance exists but is not improving decisions
  • Teams are working in silos
  • Performance has stalled despite continued activity
  • Regulation or compliance requirements are changing
  • New systems are being introduced
  • Growth has exposed weaknesses in current ways of working
  • Accountability is unclear
  • Reporting creates activity but little insight
  • People are not adopting new processes or controls

We work across the functions involved in shaping, enabling and delivering change.

This often includes:

  • Operations
  • Finance
  • HR and People
  • Technology and Digital
  • Risk, Governance and Compliance
  • Programme and Transformation teams
  • PMO and Delivery teams
  • Customer and Commercial functions

Business Change rarely belongs to one function alone. We help bring the right teams together around shared outcomes.

We work with people across the organisation, from boards and executive teams through to managers, programme leaders and operational teams.

The level of support depends on the challenge.

Senior leaders may need help clarifying direction, governance and accountability. Managers may need support turning that direction into practical ways of working. Teams may need clear communication, capability building and hands on support to adopt the change.

Yes.

We can work alongside internal programme, transformation, PMO and functional teams.

Our role may include strengthening the design, supporting delivery, improving governance, addressing adoption risks or providing experienced people where additional capability is needed.

We aim to complement the team already in place, not create unnecessary duplication.

Our team includes experienced Prosci practitioners, and we can use Prosci and ADKAR to support readiness, adoption and individual transition.

We treat frameworks as practical tools rather than fixed answers.

We apply them where they add value and adapt the approach to the organisation, the people involved and the change being delivered.

We look at three connected areas:

Design

Understanding the problem, defining the outcomes and shaping the future ways of working.

Delivery

Turning the design into clear actions, governance, plans and measurable progress.

Adoption

Helping leaders and teams understand, apply and sustain the change.

This creates a joined up approach rather than treating design, delivery and people as separate workstreams.

Measures depend on the purpose of the change, but they may include:

  • Reduced waste or duplication
  • Faster decision making
  • Clearer accountability
  • Better compliance
  • Improved process performance
  • Greater consistency across teams
  • Better quality management information
  • Improved productivity
  • Stronger adoption of new ways of working
  • Increased confidence and capability within teams

Success is not simply whether a new process has been launched. It is whether it is being used, understood and delivering the intended result.

We start with the problem that needs solving.

We do not add controls, meetings, reporting or process for the sake of appearing structured.

Our aim is to reduce friction, create clarity and make the organisation easier to operate.

Good governance should support decisions and delivery. It should not become another layer of administration.

Yes.

We help organisations translate regulatory requirements into practical operational change.

This may include redesigning processes, strengthening controls, clarifying ownership, improving reporting and helping teams understand what needs to change in their day to day work.

We also help ensure the change is embedded rather than treated as a one off compliance exercise.

It depends on the scale, complexity and maturity of the organisation.

Some engagements focus on a specific problem, process or function. Others support wider programmes over several months.

We normally begin by understanding the current position, the outcomes required and the risks involved. From there, we shape a proportionate approach rather than imposing a fixed delivery model.

We work alongside clients rather than advising from a distance.

We combine clear thinking, practical delivery and a strong understanding of how people experience change.

We bring structure without unnecessary theatre. We tell the truth early, adapt our approach to the environment and help build capability rather than dependency.

Our aim is not only to deliver the change. It is to leave the organisation stronger and more capable than we found it.
